Wallpaper Creation Guide

Wallpaper Resolution Resize Guide for Webcomic Wallpapers by Fes of Fesworks.com

Editor's Note:Fes was kind enough to create this guide to help speed up the wallpaper creation process. I tested it myself and it does indeed help a great deal. I do recommend that you keep the jpeg quality at 100% when exporting. This will ensure that there is little to no artifacting when viewed on the desktop.

----------------------------------------

For resizing your image, you may be best off using the program you used to create the image. Otherwise I can recommend the FREE image viewing software IrfanView (irfanview.net), which has great compression and quality for enlarging and shrinking. When saving a JPG with this program, be sure to select "Disable Color Subsampling".

----------------------------------------

1920x1440 is the largest you want to work with. This is also the 4:3 (aka "normal") size for a desktop wallpaper. Design your main image with room at the top and bottom, to allow for cropping for widescreen wallpapers.

1920x1440 will naturally resize nicely down to the following:

1600x1200
1440x1080
1280x960
1024x768
800x600 (not needed for WebcomicWallpapers.com)

----------------------------------------

1920x1200 is the first WIDESCREEN wallpaper you'll want to start with. Take your original 1280x1440 and crop the top and bottom to allow the best viewing of the image. Many laptops these days are going to naturally be widescreen.
* You can actually also START with this widescreen resolution, and simply add black bars at the top and bottom for when you want to do the normal 4:3 desktop resolutions. *

1920x1200 will naturally resize nicely down to the following:

1680x1050
1280x800
1024x640 (not needed for WebcomicWallpapers.com)

----------------------------------------

Now you have the oddball resolutions.

The first is 1920x1080.
This one is VERY widescreen... or should I say SHORTscreen? Again, this one you'll just have to do your best to re-crop even shorter.

The next are for the PSP and iPod, which are 320x480 and 480x272, respectively.
You are just going to have to figure out how to best crop and resize your image to fit decently enough. Methods could vary greatly between the different ways people create their desktops.
